The diagrams compare the design of two different tunnels in two cities in Australia. Overall, the tunnels differ in architectural features and are suitable for different types of geographical conditions. It is also evident that Tunnel B has a higher traffic capacity and received more financial investment compared to Tunnel A.
Looking at the first chart, it is clear that Tunnel A was built under the water, with a total investment of $556 million over the course of five years between 1987 and 1992. The structure spans 2.2 kilometers in length with a depth of 25 meters below the ground level. To shield the passage from the water, a heavy layer of stone and sand was placed above the tunnel, acting as a water barrier. A closer look reveals that the tunnel consists of twin tubes, allowing two lanes of vehicles to travel through.
Tunnel B, on the other hand, has larger dimensions and almost cost twice the investment of Tunnel A with $1.1 billion. The tunnel was constructed 35 meters underground over a relatively shorter time (2004-2007). Tunnel B, which is 3.6 kilometers long, also features twin tubes. However, Tunnel B is broader than Tunnel A as it provides sufficient space for three lanes of vehicles.
